Why "Ohana Street"?

In Hawaii (where we currently live), "Ohana" means "family". Because this blog is about our parenting and family adventures as we prepare to attend medical school, we decided to add our favorite word, "Ohana" to it. And...because our family is our home, we'd like to say that we live on "Ohana Street"--because our home can be anywhere, as long as our family is there.

Who Are We?

There are 5 of us:
5 Boards at Turtle Bay Resort, Oahu, Hawaii
Surf Boards at the Entrance of Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore, Hawaii
  • The Husband:  A full-time Healthcare Administration professional and part-time Physician Assistant who is planning on going back to school to study Medicine.
  • The Wife:  Previously a Management Consultant for a leading Strategy and Technology Consulting firm who decided to become a stay-at-home mom, housewife, and momblogger in 2012. Previously a single mom, a working mom, and now a stay-at-home mom who wants to become a med student mom. Also the author of this blog.
  • The 3 Keikis:  Namely, the Extrovert, the Introvert, and the Infant (2012 model).

Why Med School?

We believe that we have sown our wild oats in the Corporate World--and thoroughly enjoyed it...that is, until we met. We believe that, together--in the medical field--we can expand our reach even farther and become more effective in serving God and helping others...in the United States and abroad.

We plan to study Medicine in the Philippines. Since we hope to do medical missions in the Philippines, Japan, and other parts of the Asia Pacific in the future, we believe that choosing this route would be best. In addition, we would like for our children to experience living and studying in another country--and hopefully learn another language (or two) while there.

We plan to go to medical school in the Summer of 2013 or 2014.  In the meantime, we will prepare for this journey by praying and saving our hard-earned money, as we anticipate spending approximately 10 years of not seeing the combined income that our family used to enjoy. This journey will require lots of courage, determination, perseverance, as well as financial and cultural adjustments (seasoned with love, prayer, patience, and aloha) in the years ahead.

  1. Wow! I am so inspired by you. My husband and I are also considering medical school for the same reasons. We have a 7yo son, and so we just assumed that we would have to wait until he was grown and on his own. Your blog has inspired me... Praise God for you.
