Driving in Hawaii

A View of the H-1 Freeway from Up Above
Driving in Hawaii can be quite interesting, especially when you are used to hearing and using the words, "left", "right", "east", and "west", when giving/receiving driving directions.

  • When giving directions, locals typically use mauka (mountain side of the road) and makai (ocean side of the road) vs. right or left.
  • You'll also hear locals use the terms Ewa-bound (westbound) and Diamond-Head-bound (eastbound).

In addition, you may not always get exit numbers when asking for freeway off-ramps, so you may want to use your GPS. Speaking of GPS, be advised that it won't be able to pronounce most of the street names correctly.

Lastly, please don't forget that you are visiting the Aloha State; so, please...

Always remember to drive with lots of aloha.
