Finding Balance, Setting Boundaries, Saying "No"

A Photo of a Restricted Area at Kaahumanu Hale along the State Capitol District of Oahu, Hawaii

It isn't uncommon for us to find ourselves (or others close to us) in a situation where we experience difficulty in finding balance, setting boundaries, and saying "no".

I just finished writing a poem about this today.

~ I ~

Oh, Balance!
Where art thou?

My Spirit longs for you;
My Body aches for you!
When Part of me can't find you,
My Heart just breaks in two.

When one Part gives away,
The whole Being's led to follow;
Unbeknownst to Many,
Each Part feels One's sorrow.

When One is beaten down,
The Heart is thrown up high;
Afraid to rise, then fall,
Unsure to speak at all.

With hopes that One finds Balance,
To accept, One can't do it all,
To know that each Part suffers,
To protect What truly matters.

~ II ~

Oh, Boundaries!
Where art thou?

Safe Haven is in danger,
The enemies draw nearer!
They see the shrinking Border,
Shooting darts at our Shelter.

Stand fast, my Brave Guard!
They just crossed the Line!
It is time to launch Fire,
Warnings no longer matter.

Protect the last, standing Fort!
Don't do it all alone;
We are prepared to fight,
Be with stick or with stone.

Help us strengthen our Walls,
While we're still blessed with Time.
Let's enlarge our Safe Haven,
Enjoy the Gifts God has given.

~ III ~

To say, "No!"
Why canst thou?

Our foes enter our Gate--
One by one they bring Ruin,
Taking plunders in Droves,
Our sleeping Giant to awaken.

Our own Walls we will weaken,
By our own Hands we'll fall.
Let us stand close together,
Guard our Gate straight and tall.

Our Village need not suffer,
With our enemies' Spoil.
When we go out to conquer,
We won't bring back their Oil!

The Walls within must stay pure,
Our Safe Haven to preserve;
To allow for some compromise--
Means, our Foe we do serve.

~ End ~
