Humpback Whales On A Date On Valentine's Day

Pupukea Beach Park Signage Along The North Shore of Hawaii
'Tis the season to be loving...

Then again, we shouldn't have to wait until Valentine's Day to do something special for our better half.

Today, I witnessed lots of humpback whales "dancing" in the Pacific Ocean. Too bad I didn't have my DSLR camera with me!!!

Right before my very eyes, I saw whales breaching, blowing, flapping their huge tails, as if they were doing it to celebrate their love on Valentine's Day! I particularly remember seeing two of them shoot straight up into the air in unison, like soulmates! What a beautiful sight that was!

My children and I weren't even planning on seeing the whales today. As we were driving along the North Shore, we suddenly saw some whales splashing and blowing in the middle of the ocean! We stopped at the corner of Puamalu and Kamehameha Highway to get a better look but then it seemed as if they had decided to migrate somewhere else. So, we decided to head over to Waimea Bay to go for a dip, instead. Just then, we saw even more whales as we were driving towards that direction! We pulled over and parked right in front of the signage (as shown in the photo below).

Alas! We discovered another cool spot to watch humpback whales during mating season: Pupukea Beach Park!!!

Normally, people would go hiking at Makapu'u Point early in the morning just to spot these whales...or trek a few steps at Kaena Point. Getting to this spot was effortless. We just drove up, parked, and viola! We had front row seats to watch the whales from the seat of our car!

Where We Saw the Whales Dancing
Just before sunset, we started walking over to the "beach side" of Pupukea Beach Park towards Shark's Cove. The timing of our arrival couldn't have been more perfect! Just then, a huge wave came in and poured over the reef! The reef had a half-circle formation; I can still picture volumes of water trickling in five different sections as if to form several mini-waterfalls. It was gorgeous!

From time to time, waves would come from two different directions, meet, clash, and form a "volcano wave" with a pointed tip!

The sun was also in its perfect position. It cast a shadow on the beach sand that made them look like mini sand dunes!

I really could hang out at this place all day. We stayed until sunset.

Just as noteworthy, we first stopped by the Coffee Gallery at Haleiwa where I ordered a Milky Way Blended Coffee--it's a blend of chocolate, coffee, and caramel, with whipped cream on top! Then, we picked up some "banana lumpia" or "turon" at Kahuku Land Farm--it's a fruit stand on the side of the road close to Turtle Bay Resort.

This was all unplanned.

Earlier on during the day, we went to Ko Olina Beach Resort and then had lunch at a Korean Yakiniku restaurant in Honolulu.

What a beautiful day!!!

Now it's 8:30PM and my husband is home. We are going to go driving along the coastline at night--one of our favorite activities to do together as a couple!

Until my next post. Aloha!!!
